REMOVAL
DAY
ACCESS TO THE PREMISES - Before
your removal can commence, the van must be
placed as near as possible to the building.
If you live in a narrow, restricted or busy
street please contact the local Police. You
will usually find them very helpful. If your
house is at the end of a long drive with
overhanging branches; consider a bit of
pruning. Removal vans are tall; up to 13FT
6IN high and expensive to replace. Think
about the access at the other end, note that
if we have quoted for delivery to an address
with good access and the van cannot get
close to the property we may have to make an
additional charge.
THE REMOVAL CREW - Our crews are
friendly and helpful men who are trained
porters with considerable experience. They
will be delighted to hear good advice but
you will not need to stand over them to
ensure they are careful. They will not mind
if you want to help out with the smaller
things, but please remember that they are
ultimately responsible for the safe delivery
of your possessions. Moving furniture is
heavy work requiring continuous mental and
physical effort so the odd tea break goes
down well and gives the crew a chance to
meet you.
TOP
LOADING THE VAN - The normal order of
loading is upholstered items first then the
bedroom furniture and other large items,
lounge and kitchen effects; boxes; carpets;
finally, the freezer and garden things.
Avoid leaving boxes in corridors as this
will hinder access. Delivery will be in
reverse order.
BEFORE LEAVING MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING
HAS BEEN LOADED - Check fitted
wardrobes, lofts, airing cupboards, garages
and sheds. It is ultimately your
responsibility to ensure that everything is
taken. Turn off water, gas and electricity
at the mains. In winter drain the water
tanks if the property is likely to be empty
for a while. Lock up securely.
OVERNIGHT DELIVERY - advise our
driver roughly as to what time you will be
at the new property. An overnight contact
number as well as directions or a rough map
of how to find the property are useful.
DELIVERING YOUR GOODS - It is
important that someone is on hand when the
van arrives so that the crew can be told
where to put each item as it is unloaded.
Your furniture will be placed where you want
it providing it is reasonably possible to do
this. Note that we may not be able to get
the piano up the attic stairways. We must
have prior notice if a piano has to be taken
up or down a flight of stairs so that
sufficient men are asked to do the job.
Labelling boxes saves time. It is a good
idea to have a set room for boxes which will
not be unpacked straight away to avoid
clutter in the main rooms. Whilst our men
will lift or roll any carpets you are
taking, we cannot cut or fit them.
Protection will be provided for carpets
already fitted, especially on rainy days or
where building site mud is a problem. Safety
dictates that this cannot be done on stair
carpets. Any furniture dismantled by us will
be re-erected. On completion the remaining
blankets will be folded and the back of the
van swept out. Whilst our crew are doing
this; check that everything is where you
want it and that the van is empty.
TOP
UNPACKING of boxes is not normally
included unless otherwise specified on your
quotation. If you want to get as many boxes
empty as possible on the day, advise the
crew as the van is loaded so that the boxes
can be last on first off. Arrange to have a
few friends/relatives on hand as an
unpacking squad.
PREPARATIONS FOR STORAGE - Items not
to be stored should be clearly labelled or
out of the way. Greater attention is needed
when cleaning your cooker, fridge or
freezer. These will be stored where possible
with the door slightly open to avoid
unpleasant smells. A slice lemon will help
keep them fresh. Velvet curtains should be
rolled rather than folded. Wardrobe cartons
are provided for hanging garments. Items 8ft
or longer will be stored loose. The
container vans are all very large so if you
decide to move house with awkward access it
is doubly important that we are informed.
PROHIBITED ITEMS - Under no
circumstances will the following be accepted
in store: fuel of any kind including paints,
empty gas cylinders, any petrol driven
machine without the tank having been removed
or so thoroughly cleaned that no detectable
vapours are given off, food including, dried
food, canned food and drinks and any item
infected by woodworm or any other pest.
Seperate arrangements should be made for
plants.
GENERAL NOTES - Packing your
furniture into containers takes longer than
packing into a conventional van, to avoid
clashing with incoming people it is worth
considering booking the move into storage
the day before your completion day and the
move out of store the day after you formally
complete on the new property. It is possible
to get an odd item out of storage before the
main delivery, however there will be an
extra charge for this service.
MAKE SURE DRIVING
LICENCE, CAR KEYS, PASSPORT OR OTHER
IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS ARE NOT PUT INTO STORE.
Try to give as much notice as possible for
the move out of store. At busy periods, a
minimum of 2 weeks notice may be necessary.
Storage is invoiced quarterly . Please note
that if you come out of store before the end
of the quarter we will refund in full any
overpaid storage. A contact address will be
taken on collection of the goods and it is
vital that you advise us of any changes. All
outstanding storage and delivery charges
should be settled and cleared before
delivery commences.
