RELATIVES AND FRIENDS
Maybe they've heard about your plans, or maybe you've lost touch and see this as a golden opportunity to resume contact. Go through your personal directory and send off change of address cards.
Notify your gas showroom as far in advance as possible. Find out the charge for disconnecting appliances that are going with you and make an appointment. If your moving within your gas region, your current region will transfer the paperwork and arrange disconnection at the other end but if you're going out of your region, you will have to contact the new area yourself. However, reading your own meter for the final reading is normally accepted.
By law you must notify your district office at least two working days before moving but this is the minimum notice and you should get it done earlier. Otherwise, the arrangements are the same as for the gas.
MILK DELIVERY
Pay your bill up until the moving day and then tell the milkman to cancel your service. To ensure delivery at the other end, ring the new dairy in advance with your start date.
MAIL REDIRECTION
The Royal Mail needs seven days notice. You can pick up a 'Moving home?' Redirection Application form at your local Post Office branch. Alternatively, call your local Customer Service Centre on 0845 7740 740 and they will send you one.
BT, Mercury, pagers and mobiles: today there's a whole host of companies who need to know when their subscribers move.
BT needs two weeks' warning to make sure your new line is ready for use. But get this done as early as possible so you can include your new number on your address cards.

Discontinue your newspapers and magazines and send in changes on subscription.
TV / APPLIANCE RENTAL
Find out which appliances can be taken to your new area and which ones must be turned in and re-entered. Accounts with the major appliance rental firms can usually be transferred to the branch nearest to you.
Vehicle Registration (DVLA)
Complete the relevant section on the reverse side or at the bottom of your registration document and send to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre, Swansea, SA99 1AR Web site http://www.dvla.gov.uk/ or ring 0870 240 0009.
DRIVING LICENCE
Complete the relevant section on your licence and send to the Customer Enquiries (Drivers) Unit, DVLC, Swansea, SA6 7JL This takes at least two to three weeks so you may want to leave it until you have moved. Ring: 0870 240 0009 with any queries.
HOUSE CONTENTS INSURANCE
Often this insurance is offered at the same time as your mortgage, in which case it will be sorted out before the move. However, if you plan to stay with your current insurance company, notify them of your new details and re-negotiate additional or reduced cover.
LIFE INSURANCE & PENSIONS
Send your change of address cards off to the relevant companies. You may want to take this opportunity to check your policy and see whether it still suits your needs.
PREMIUM BONDS
Fill in the form with your holder card or notify National Savings and Investments, Blackpool , FY3 9YP. Tel, 0845 964 5000. The Post Office will supply an addressed envelope.
PENSION BOOK
Your post office or DSS will arrange the change of address. Don't send the book itself. If you receive child allowance, notify the DSS.
SCHOOLS
Write to your new Local Authority for an information pack about schools in the area. If you can, do extra research into which schools are best suited for your children. Meanwhile, notify the current school's
head teacher of your child's leaving date.
DOCTOR
De-register and re-register with the new doctor as soon as possible. To find a new doctor, ring the Community Health Council in your area. Women can demand a female doctor.
DENTIST
De-register and re-register as soon as possible.
OPTICIAN
Explain to the optician that you're moving and request the results and dates of your last eye test to give to your new optician.
VET
Transfer your pet's records to a new vet.
PROFESSIONAL ADVISORS SOLICITOR, ACCOUNTANT, STOCK BROKER
Advise of your move. If you were happy with the service, ask for a recommendation to a professional in your area.
LOCAL AUTHORITY
Notify at either end of the move so that your local taxes are transferred to the new occupant of your old home, and so you pay the correct tax in your new home.
